Rather than simply try to replicate the material in established texts, this text takes a different approach, for several reasons.

First, this text recognizes that very few engineers need the breadth and depth found in traditional texts. In practice, circuit analysis and design has largely moved away from the focus on analysis and design of small circuits. Rather, real world circuit analysis and design focuses much more on the selection of integrated circuits and on the creation of circuits that interface integrated circuits to one another.

Second, this text recognizes that many analog circuits have been replaced by digital circuits in many applications. As a result, analog circuit design in a digital world focuses on analog signal conditioning and translation prior to conversion to digital, and also in the translation and conditioning of analog signals arising from digital signals.

Third, this text recognizes that modern computing tools have largely eliminated the need for being able to solve electric circuits by hand.

Fourth, this text recognizes that electric circuits can no longer be a central focus of the curriculum. There simply is not enough time available, given the need to adequately cover higher level concepts that are needed in the workplace.

Fifth, this text recognizes that textbooks have become outrageously priced.

Based on these observations, Essential Electric Circuits covers only the essential aspects of electric circuits. The fundamental aspects of DC, transient, and AC circuits are covered. Much of the excruciating detail found in traditional texts is absent. The philosophy for this is that students need to take the essential concepts with them in their careers, but they do not carry the excruciating detail with them, even if it is covered in circuits courses. And by excluding the excruciating detail, students will more likely retain the essential aspects they need.

To cite just one example among many, nodal analysis is covered, but mesh analysis is not. These analysis tools are seldom used in practice for hand calculations and because it is the analysis approach underlying most circuit analysis software. Nodal analysis is covered because it solves for voltages, not currents. Voltages are the predominant variable in most electric circuits. In digital circuits, the presence or absence of a voltage dictates logic states. In analog circuits, voltages contain the information that is manipulated. Op amps and filters are almost always used to process voltages.

Essential Electric Circuits takes a different approach in the way material is presented as well. Here presentation more closely resembles the conversational tone and content one uses in lectures. For many students this improves comprehension. Because students often struggle with algebraic manipulations, this text explicitly shows the steps involved in derivations. Intermediate circuits are also shown.

Traditional texts do not make value judgments. As a result, students naturally believe that everything is equally valuable, when it clearly is not. Because making value judgments is vital and common in the workplace, this text addresses the relative importance of topics.

Most importantly, Essential Electric Circuits addresses practical workplace topics. For example, practical component values, the effect of tolerances, circuit loading, and real models for resistors, capacitors and inductors are included. Moreover, this text covers vital practical topics that cannot be found elsewhere. Topics include bypass capacitors, oscilloscope probes, power dissipation in logic circuits, single supply op amp operation, and crosstalk mitigation using twisted pairs, differential signaling, and common mode chokes.

ISBN-10: 098269265X
ISBN-13: 9780982692653
Author: Hanselman, Duane, N/A, N/A
Publisher: E-Man Press LLC

Katherine Shippen collaborated with Anthony Ravielli, the illustrator to give a history of the study of biology for students in the middle school grades. These questions have been asked throughout history by people of virtually every race, religion, culture, and nationality. Indeed, they seem integral to the human experience, which probably explains why children everywhere love to learn about our planet and space. This book is designed to help you understand the evidence-based answers that modern science now gives us to these ancient questions, along with the implications that these answers may hold for us as a species. The book opens with a remarkable image from the James Webb Space Telescope that encapsulates thousands of galaxies spread over more than 13 billion years of time. Two chapters then focus on the structure and scale of space as we work our way outward from Earth to the solar system, galaxy, and the universe as a whole. The book then follows with a chapter that covers our cosmic origins from the Big Bang to the present, along with ways of making sense of the scale of time. A final chapter summarize the key lessons learned. The book uses a Q&A format with two levels of questions: a first level that covers the key ideas of scale, and a second level that provides a deeper level of insight. It also incorporates an extensive set of endnotes, designated as " Teacher Notes" because they are designed to help K-12 teachers (and other readers looking for greater depth) understand background information that will be helpful when discussing the topics in this book with students. No matter whether you are a teacher, student, parent, or general reader, The Scale of the Universe will leave you constantly amazed as you learn the true meaning of the word " astronomical." You'll also come away with a new " cosmic perspective" that will permanently change how you view our planet, our species, and yourself. This practical guide shows how notebooks can become a tangible record of their emerging understanding of and proficiency in science. Students can use their notebooks to pose questions, write down observations, work through puzzling data, or think through new ideas. You can use them to ascertain each student's strengths and challenges in participating in the academic work of science. Science Notebooks in Student-Centered Classrooms offers the following: - Specific guidance on how to start using notebooks--or improve what you already do. Find out how to help students learn to organize information while also preserving their own voices and choices. Many of the samples are from actual student notebooks. - Advice on the best ways to use notebooks. Explore lessons, instructional routines, and assessment techniques that pair well with science notebooks. - Practical techniques. Discover how to use notebooks to assess student work and plan future lessons even as you integrate language arts and mathematics into your science class. - Blackline masters you can use at your discretion. These are provided in the appendix for organizational elements (such as a table of contents) and instruction (graphic organizers). Throughout, the book's approach aligns with the vision in A Framework for K-12 Science Education, the Next Generation Science Standards, and current research about notebooks. You can be sure the strategies in this book really work because author Jessica Fries-Gaither is a veteran teacher who has personally tested every technique. She is also the author of the award-winning NSTA Kids books Notable Notebooks: Scientists and Their Writings and Exemplary Evidence: Scientists and Their Data. After all, dandelions, toads, robins, and constellations have changed little since then! And modern society's concern with the quality of life and the impact of people on soil, water, and wildlife makes this book even more relevant.

Nature-study, as used in this handbook, encompasses all living things except humans, as well as all nonliving things such as rocks and minerals, the heavens, and weather. Of the living things described, most are common in the northeastern states, and many, such as the dandelion, milkweed, and mullein, and the house mouse, muskrat, and red fox, are so widespread that people living outside the United States will recognize them easily.

Anna Botsford Comstock very appropriately took the view that we should know first and best the things closest to us.
